Cheap Sunglasses
73” wide x 26" high
I loved making this quilt. Every step of the process was a total blast.
Fiber Artists @ loose ends, a group I belong to, was asked to create an assortment of wall quilts for permanent display at the Brehm Center for Type I Diabetes Research and Analysis and Ophthalmology Center at the University of Michigan. The quilts provide education and a pleasing environment for the Diabetic and Ophthalmology patients and staff. I immediately thought of glasses, and I wanted them to be fun.
I graphed out this design without the aid of any computer software and then used a die cutter to cut out over 1,040 circles of slightly over 1" wide. First, I quilted the background in a grid. Then I laid out the circles to create the design, playing with value to create shadows and light. Then I quilted through the circles in another grid pattern, this time on point. The edges of the circles are unfinished, creating some interest from the side.
This quilt now belongs to the University of Michigan.
